Trauma Informed Care
Welcome to HAQI TRAUMA INFORMED CARE UNIT!
Establishing Trauma Informed Care Units in the war-torn Tigray region of Ethiopia's eastern zone is our mission. We recognize the profound impact of conflict and war on the mental health of educators and the urgent need for trauma-informed care practices in the education sector.
Background
Conflict and war have left educators in the Tigray region devastated, having witnessed unimaginable events and atrocities. The Haqi Foundation's assessment revealed alarming levels of mental health issues among educators, including anxiety, depression, burnout, and trauma-related symptoms. To address this crisis, we are committed to establishing Trauma Informed Care Units in schools, providing essential support to both educators and their students.
Trauma Informed Care Units (TICUs)?
Trauma Informed Care Units (TICUs) are specialized programs that provide trauma-informed care to individuals who have experienced trauma. TICUs create safe and supportive environments, recognizing the impact of trauma and promoting healing and resilience. They focus on safety, trustworthiness, choice and collaboration, empowerment, cultural sensitivity, and resilience and healing. TICUs can be found in various settings and aim to address the unique needs of individuals affected by trauma.
Objectives
Our project aims to facilitate the establishment and initiation of trauma-informed care units through comprehensive training programs. We will train a network of educators who will then cascade their knowledge to schools in the eastern zone of Tigray. Additionally, we will strengthen school clubs and conduct mental health activities to promote awareness and healing.
What We Do
Our project focuses on establishing Trauma Informed Care Units in schools within the eastern zone of the Tigray region. Through a comprehensive approach, we aim to:
- Training and Empowerment: We provide intensive training to educators, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to recognize and respond to trauma-related issues. This includes promoting self-care practices and building resilience.
- Establishing Focal Persons: Each school will have a designated focal person responsible for liaising with governmental and nongovernmental institutions working on mental health issues. These focal persons will play a vital role in coordinating support services and ensuring a seamless referral process.
- Screening and Identification: We develop appropriate screening and identification modalities to identify mental health symptoms among educators. Early detection allows for timely intervention and support.
- Referral Linkages and Follow-up: We establish a standard referral linkage system to ensure that educators who require clinical support receive appropriate care. We also provide follow-up mechanisms to monitor their progress and well-being.
- School Clubs and Mental Health Activities: We strengthen school clubs and engage trained champions to promote awareness and understanding of trauma and mental health issues among students. These activities create a safe space for students to share their experiences and build a supportive community.
Outcome
By implementing trauma-informed approaches, we aim to improve staff satisfaction, mental well-being, and job performance. Our approach will create a supportive and healing environment, improving the quality of services and fostering a community of hope and recovery.
Target Groups
Our intervention will benefit 8,045 teachers and 245,580 students from 458 schools in the eastern zone of Tigray. Through training a dedicated task force, we aim to ensure the sustainability and long-term impact of the Trauma Informed Care Units.
Sustainability
We are committed to the sustainability of our Trauma Informed Care Units. To achieve this, we will train a task force capable of executing, protecting, and sustaining the objectives of the units. We will seek funding opportunities and establish collaborations with local and international institutions working on mental health.
